Breakin’ Convention, Sadler’s Wells’ critically acclaimed international festival of hip hop dance theatre, is back to South Yorkshire, with a full day of performances from local crews and international artists at Cast in Doncaster on Saturday 7 May.
More than just a show, Breakin’ Convention is an experience that will transform Cast and Sir Nigel Gresley Square outside with free events, including live graffiti art, live DJs and hip hop dance battles – suitable for all the family.
Now in its 13th year, this hugely popular festival is once again hosted and curated by Saddler’s Well’s Associate Artist Jonzi D, one of the most influential artists in the British hip hop scene alongside South Yorkshire’s own Pierre Lafayette-Marsh. Breakin’ Convention has firmly established itself as one of the major highlights on the British dance calendar and one of the world’s greatest celebrations of hip hop culture. Saturday 7 March is the festival’s only Yorkshire date for 2016.
This year’s Breakin’ Convention line features three international acts, including leading French street dance artist Antoinette Gomis performing Images, an atmospheric solo piece drawing on Civil Rights history and the music of Nina Simone.
Spain’s award-winning Iron Skulls crew present the surreal Sinestesia, a dynamic work merging hip hop with acrobatics that sees the dancers morphing into post-apocalyptic survivors.
World Champion b-boy crew The Ruggeds from the Netherlands present the explosive Adrenaline – a show filed with acrobatics, gravity-defying jumps, music and energy that will make your soul anxious to get up and move. The company has recently collaborated with Justin Bieber on the video for the single Where Are Ü Now.
Taking the stage alongside the international acts are four South Yorkshire hip hop dance theatre companies and artists: SD Kreative, Twisted Poets, Daniel Phung Dance and Rationale.
Hip Hop fans can also learn the moves on stage by taking part in a workshop with Antoinette Gomis and the Ruggeds – open to all abilities.
Free afternoon activities will start from 2pm and tickets for Breakin’ Convention evening show on Saturday 7 May at 7.30pm at Cast in Doncaster are £16.50 / £14.50 concessions / £8.50 for Under 26s, available on 01302 303 959 or by visiting castindoncaster.com.
