This month our featured artist is the mighty August Charles.
August Charles is another immense talent to hypothetically graduate from the Higher Rhythm talent development programme that has spearheaded the careers of artists such as Skinny Pelembe, LIO and Explicare.
The programme aims to give artists from across South Yorkshire the opportunity to develop their work, ready to begin their first step into the music industry.
August was scouted by Higher Rhythm back in 2019, and through the programme, working alongside renowned studio engineer Paul Littlewood and multi-award winning producer Andy Seward, August has benefited from high-quality recording and mentoring facilities. It was here that August transformed his sparkling potential into tangible achievements – such as his debut single, ‘Take Me Away’.
If you don’t follow us on Instagram, you’ ll have missed out on August’s incredible take over of our insta stories. (Join us over on insta here to be in the know for future takeovers). August is the first artist to take over our instagram, where he shared his love of music and the inspiration behind his work. He also created a music quiz and a live performance of his new single ‘Take Me Away’ which blew the virtual roof off.
After also appearing on a new local radio show DN12 Live, many of our followers have been left wanting to know more about this new talent.
Based in Doncaster, this triple-threat singer, songwriter and producer takes inspiration from soul, R&B, pop and in the rich zamrock movement of the mid 70’s.
Zamrock is a musical genre that emerged in the 1970s in Zambia. It is described as a combination of traditional African music with psychedelic rock and funk. It has been described as the combined sound of Jimi Hendrix and James Brown.
August has a flawless falsetto, that has been compared to Sampha, Laura Mvula, King Krule and Frank Ocean. We’re not just saying that – you need to check his stuff out.
His new single ‘Take Me Away’ is a dreamy fusion of jazz and soul, complemented by a flutter of scintillating piano. In these difficult times, ‘Take Me Away’ allows listeners to escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life during lockdown.
All Doncasterian’s should be mega proud of the Higher Rhythm programme and what it’s achieving for local artists. Funded by Arts Council England, the programme focuses purely on artists who might otherwise fail to develop their work due to the issues of costly studio fees and the general lack of mentoring support for creatives industries in Doncaster.
